What is a cochlear implant?

A cochlear implant is an electronic device that is surgically placed under the skin behind the ear. It provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing by bypassing the damaged cochlea and sending sounds electronically to the brain. A cochlear implant can give a deaf person useful hearing of environmental sounds and help him or her to understand speech, as well as communicate orally. Cochlear implants were designed for people who obtain little or no benefit from hearing aids.

People get a cochlear implant to restore their ability to hear. Adults want to be independent and feel included instead of isolated. They want to take part in conversation, hear their children or grandchildren talk, listen to music or simply listen to the sounds of nature. They want to be confident that they can hear in all listening situations, even in background noise.

Parents want their child to hear the sounds of life. They want to provide their child with the opportunity to learn to listen, talk and communicate, freely and independently. They want their child to participate fully in the world of sound.

How does a cochlear implant work

A cochlear implant creates a new way of hearing. It consists of an internal implant which is surgically inserted into the inner ear, and the external sound processor that is worn on the ear or the body..
